Among the major violin virtuosos of the 20th century, the Russian Leonid Kogan occupies an important place. After his debuts in the West, critics were overwhelmed and praised his „superhuman technique“, „the purity of his tone“, and marveled at the deep expressive power of his Bach interpretation; colleagues were impressed, too, with Svjatoslaw Richter commenting “it doesn’t get better than this” on Kogan‘s ecstatic presentation of Tchaikovsky‘s violin concerto. Among the ten original albums documented on this box are milestones of the violin literature, which also are outstanding recordings, including Paganini‘s violin concerto No. 1; Khachaturian‘s D Minor Concerto in a fantastic recording under Monteux; Mozart‘s 3rd and Prokofiev‘s second violin concertos, and of course the recordings of the concerts of Brahms and Tchaikovsky, the former under Kondrashin, the latter under the leadership of Constantin Silvestri. Bach‘s double concerto and the popular BWV 1042 and Beethoven‘s violin concerto are included alongside the groundbreaking interpretation of the „Archduke Trio“ with Mstislav Rostropovich and Emil Gilels, with whom Kogan formed a highly successful trio. Examples of this fruitful chamber music collaboration are recordings of the trio with works of Schumann, Mozart and Haydn. Many other discographic treasures of concert- and chamber music, such as Lalos Symphonie Espagnole or the Brahms sonatas, can be found among these recordings from the years 1950 to 1959. Bonus tracks include, among others, the 1958 live recordings of Mozart‘s violin concerto No. 3 (with the New York Philharmonic under Mitropoulos) and Brahms‘ op. 77 with Monteux directing the Boston Philharmonic Orchestra.
