Born in 1926, American pianist Julius Katchen enjoyed an unprecedented world career. As an eleven-year-old, he sat on the podium as a soloist in Mozart‘s d minor concerto at the invitation of eugene Ormandy in new york. Later based in Paris, where he studied philosophy with a scholarship at the Sorbonne, he began a fast-paced career that quickly led him around the world. Le Figaro hailed him as a „singularly expressive poet on the piano“. Soon he was highly praised as a performer around the world, due to his technical brilliance, coupled with boldness, a seemingly endless range of timbres, and a superior musical understanding. Katchen is still regarded as an unsurpassed Brahms interpreter, and many of the other recordings presented here from 12 original albums from the years 1950 to 1961 are also among the highlights of record history – from Beethoven‘s diabelli variations via solo works by chopin, Schumann and Britten to concerts by Prokofi ev, tchaikovsky , Liszt, Rachmaninov, Bartók and others.
