Arthur Grumiaux is undoubtedly one of the most important violinists of the 20th century. Coming from the famous Belgian violin-school, he was seen as a natural heir to Vieuxtemps, Ysaye, and César Thompson. His extreme musicality and his ability to express the deepest of emotions, his playing, which combined basic musical virtues in a unique manner, brought him the respect and admiration of musical colleagues. This box presents ten original albums from 1956 until 1961, all of them exceptional recordings such as the ones of Beethoven’s violin sonatas with Clara Haskill, highlights in the interpretational history of the violin-literature. Just as legendary are the recordings of Bach’s sonatas and partitas, which earned Grumiaux the reputation of an excellent Bach-interpreter. The Mozart sonatas No. 40 & 42 as well as the concerts KV 216 & 219 from 1956 and 1961 respectively, the Brahms concert as well as works by Chausson, Lalo and Ravel round off the acoustic portrait of an artist, whose LP-recordings have a fi rm place in the “Must Have”- section. As a bonus, we have included Stravinsky’s D-major concert in a recording under the direction of Fricsay from 1951.
