Genre: Jazz
New Orleans, the birthplace of jazz, had a pioneering role as the center of rhythm and blues in the 1950s and thus delivered some of the main ingredients for Rock & Roll. The singer and pianist Fats Domino was the most commercially successful representative of the New Orleans Sound at the time. His producer and co-author Dave Bartholomew was the uncrowned king in the studios of the city and produced several of the artists represented here. His successor Allen Toussaint is represented here with his beginnings with Irma Thomas and Aaron Neville. Pianists played a major role in the Crescent City, most notably Professor Longhair, but also Champion Jack Dupree, who left his home town early on, but kept its sound for the rest of his life. Jazz went on to new heights elsewhere, but the city’s most famous son, Louis Armstrong, recorded one of his most wonderful albums with the blues masterpieces of W.C. Handy in the mid-Fifties.
